Liner Note

When I was asked to write a few words for this album, I agreed to do so immediately, without having heard a note of it. I love the way Sue Raney sings. I think Bob Florence is one of the most talented musician/ composer/arrangers and, like millions of other people, I've long been an admirer of the superb lyrics of Alan & Marilyn Bergman.

Imagine my delight, therefore, when my copy of the tape arrived and I discovered that this is a genuine treasure of an album. It has taste, wit, style and is in a class by itself. The listener is in for a treat.

Flight of Fancy was conceived by Sue & Bob as a tribute to the Bergmans. The title song (Sue's lyric, Bob's melody) is dedicated to them. In Bob's words: "It expresses a state of mind." I suspect it is euphoria at being able to voice all those glorious words. Every band is a gem, a surprise: a mint fresh, new look at some of the prettiest songs ever written.

Bob has done some wonderful arrangements using several synthesizers in such a warm, innovative way that they don't even sound like synthesizers, and he has augmented them with drums, bass, and his own unique and lovely talent on the piano. Listen to the surprising and moving key changes and chords in the Goodbye Medley, or his clear, liquid playing in You Must Believe in Spring which, incidentally, singer and pianist recorded in one take.

As for Ms. Raney — well, she is a marvel. Her. voice has phenomenal range and pitch. She has amazing breath control, crystal clear diction and a way with words that makes me writhe with envy. She has passion. She is an actress. She gives the lyrics textures, so that songs like Summer Me, Winter Me or His Eyes, Her Eyes become utterly impressionistic. You hear and feel and see and understand. She can be sultry and smokey in tone as in Take Me Home or suddenly turn on vocal calisthenics as she does in Sure as You're Born or with the thrilling ending of Piece of Sky, Sometimes she'll simply "talk" a song or choose to become another instrument with the group. The end result is that it all sounds comfortable and so easy.

I guess you can tell I'm a fan. Listen to this album and, like me, after hearing the cheeky, charming rendition of That Face with its whistles and carnival flavour, I suspect you'll feel like celebrating.
