Summer, 1957.
I was tooling down 22nd Street in the family's '56 Ford -- Navajo Beige and white two-tone, about the same color as this page -- listening to the best deejay in Dubuque, Bob Gribben on KDTH.
And Gribben said, "Here's a brand-new singer, Sue Raney, with a brand-new song, The Careless Years."
After the first few notes of that lush and lovely voice I pulled to the side of the street just to listen, and WOW! I fell in love with that voice. As the song finished I was sitting there with my eyes closed, and Gribben said, "By the way, Sue Raney is just seventeen years old."
I was just seventeen years old, and for the rest of the summer I fantasized about how I would become a famous singer and Sue and I would be a duet like Steve and Eydie. It was great to be seventeen.
My pursuit of fame as a singer and musician lasted about seven years. At twenty-four I got a day job, got married, and made my music just for the love of it.
But I never forgot Sue Raney, and I held onto my badly worn 45 of The Careless Years (Hear a sample).
Now, fifty years later, I've started this website because I still love her voice, and I hope to introduce you to that lovely voice as well.
